Eye Care Forecast 2025: Navigating Trends and Challenges for the Year Ahead

by | Oct 14, 2024 | Data Insights and Industry Trends

Accurate forecasting is essential for making informed business decisions. By examining historical trends and predicting future outcomes, businesses can anticipate market shifts, optimize inventory, and adjust to changing consumer behavior.

For the vision industry, forecasting helps stakeholders plan more effectively, allocate resources, and stay prepared for evolving consumer demands. It offers a clear roadmap for navigating both growth opportunities and potential challenges.

METHODS

We analyzed unit sales over nine quarters (Q3 2022 through Q3 2024) and built a forecast for the following five quarters (Q4 2024 through Q4 2025). Our dataset covers 2,250 ECP locations across the U.S., tracking four key categories: eye exams, contact lenses, ophthalmic lenses, and frames. By using exponential smoothing, a time-series analysis method, we were able to predict future outcomes based on past trends.

The percentage change in unit sales, compared to the same quarter from the previous year, was used to forecast growth over the next five quarters.

HISTORIC RESULTS

Lenses saw a recovery in 2023, after negative growth in 2022. The growth rate peaked at 4.82% in Q1 2023 but gradually dropped to 0.24% by Q3. Overall, lenses experienced an average growth rate of 1.44% during this period.

Contact Lenses were the most volatile category, with growth peaking at 4.77% in Q1 2023 and then plunging to -2.03% by Q3 2023. The average growth rate was 1.27%, with significant fluctuations.

Eye Exams maintained consistent growth, peaking at 6.89% in Q1 2023 before slowing to 1.34% by Q3. The average growth rate for the period was 3.72%.

Frames struggled to maintain positive growth, experiencing a low of -1.19% in Q4 2022 and peaking at 4.07% in Q1 2023. Growth slowed to -0.50% by Q3 2023, with an average growth rate of 0.35%.

HISTORIC RESULTS VS. FORECAST

From Q4 2023 through Q3 2024, actual results were compared to prior forecasts:

  • Lenses: While fluctuating, actual growth mostly stayed within forecast boundaries, except for Q1 2024, where growth dipped below expectations.
  • Contact Lenses: Actual growth consistently underperformed, falling below forecasts except in Q2 2024.
  • Eye Exams: Underperformed in most quarters, with actual growth consistently falling below forecasted expectations.
  • Frames: Showed mixed results, sometimes meeting expectations but deviating sharply in others. Performance stabilized in Q2 and Q3 2024.

FORECAST FOR 2025

Looking ahead from Q4 2024 through Q4 2025, the forecast predicts:

  • Contact Lenses: Continued decline across all quarters, with the sharpest drop expected in Q4 2025 at -7.47%.
  • Eye Exams: A mixed forecast, with slight positive growth in early 2025, followed by a decline in later quarters.
  • Frames: Continued volatility, with negative growth predicted in several quarters, especially Q4 2024 and Q4 2025.
  • Lenses: The most stable category, showing slight fluctuations between positive and negative growth.

OVERALL OBSERVATIONS AND TRENDS

The overall outlook suggests challenges ahead, particularly for contact lenses and frames, which face consistent negative growth. Eye exams show some potential for recovery, while lenses remain the most stable category. However, broad confidence intervals point to significant uncertainty, making close monitoring essential.

Future strategic decisions should focus on mitigating declines in contacts and frames, leveraging potential recoveries in exams, and maintaining stability in lenses. Keep in mind that these forecasts rely on historical data and do not account for external factors like economic conditions or unforeseen events, which could significantly affect outcomes.
